9th EASN International Conference - Final Countdown

Only 6 days left for the beginning of the 9th EASN International Conference on Innovation in Aviation & Space!

The Organizing Committee is ready to welcome the participants between the 3rd and the 6th September 2019, at the National Center for Scientific Research (NCSR) “Demokritos” in Athens, Greece. So far, more than 400 scientists, engineers and policy makers are expected to join the event. The final agenda of the Conference has been released and you may find it here. The agenda includes 9 Κey-Νote Lectures and more than 370 technical presentations distributed in approximately 70 sessions. Additionaly, representatives of the Greek Aviation and Space ecosystem will have the opportunity to demonstrate their work, as the event is structured in a way that will enhance the interaction and will present an excellent opportunity for networking and creating new synergies for future collaborations. Joint Declaration for Clean Aviation in Horizon Europe
Twenty-three Aeronautics Industry leaders, Research Organisations and university Associations across Europe signed on the 19^th of June 2019 at Paris Air Show (Le Bourget) a Joint Declaration of European Aviation Research Stakeholders Related to Clean Aviation in Horizon Europe, to express their strong commitment to a future European partnership that can lead the way towards a deep decarbonisation of aviation by 2050. The EASN Association, being the stakeholder of the European Academia active in the field of aviation related research, is amongst the entities that signed this declaration. The partnership should build on the progress made under the Clean Sky programmes and develop further-reaching innovations and concrete roadmaps for their implementation in a new breed of aircraft from 2030 and beyond.

Following to the above joint declaration, the EASN Association has been invited by Clean Sky JU, to represent Academia and participate in a Preparation Group that will shape the Clean Sky 3 Work Programme. In this context, the EASN Association is represented in the High-Level Committee of Clean Sky 3 Preparation Group (CS3PG) by Prof. Spiros Pantelakis and Prof. Andreas Strohmayer. Two pillars defining the main technical scope and content of the CS3 programme are shaped:
- Explore & Mature - i.e. a high-level disruptive and long-term research agenda (EASN representatives: Co-chair of the WG: Prof. Spiros Pantelakis, Member of the WG: Dr. Helge Pfeiffer)
- Integrate & Demonstrate - i.e. the demonstrator programme (EASN representatives: Co-chair of the WG: Prof. Andreas Strohmayer)
Interview of the CSJU Head of Strategic Development Mr. Ron Van Manen

EASN Association is pleased to host an interview of Mr. Ron Van Manen (short CV here), Head of Strategic Development of Clean Sky Joint Undertaking. Mr. Van Manen kindly accepted to share with the readers of the EASN Newsletter his perspective regarding the challenges of the Aviation Sector for the next decades as well as the joint effort of the European Stakeholders to formulate the Clean Sky 3 Programme in the frame of the upcoming Horizon Europe.
White Book on breakthrough innovation and disruptive concepts in Aviation & Space

The EASN Association elaborated a White Book on breakthrough innovation and disruptive concepts in Aviation. This White Book contains a number of upstream and breakthrough research topics proposed by the Board of Directors, the National Contact Points as well as individual EASN members. It will serve as the input that will be provided by EASN on shaping Horizon Europe in Aeronautics, in the frame of EASN’s institutional role as Academia representative. The White Book remains open and will be constantly updated with input.

After an extensive consultation involving a big number of EASN members, EASN released the first version of the White Book on breakthrough innovation and disruptive concepts in Space. This White Book includes space research priority topics and research implementation within Horizon Europe framework, enabling EASN to contribute to the Space Strategy research and its implementation process from the viewpoint of University research and technology related to Space.

3rd EASN Stakeholders Advisory Board (SAB)
The 3^rd EASN Stakeholders Advisory Board (SAB) was held on the 4^th of April 2019 in Brussels, where the SAB members had the opportunity to exchange ideas and decide on future steps and actions. The EASN Stakeholders Advisory Board consists of seven distinguished personalities of the aeronautics community:

2nd EASN NCP meeting

The EASN Association has revitalized the role of the National Contact Points (NCP’s). National Contact Points will be EASN’s direct contact link for the Academia in their countries and at the same time entrance point for co-operation requests from other Stakeholders (Industry, SMEs, Research Establishments, Public).

The 2^nd EASN National Contact Points meeting was successfully conducted at the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest on the 29^th of May 2019 in the frame of the 8^th European Aeronautics Days (Aerodays). The meeting aimed at discussing the progress performed during the last three months and provided the opportunity for a fruitful exchange of ideas among NCPs on their future steps.

The 3^rd EASN NCP meeting will take place on the 6^th of September 2019 in Athens, during the the 9^th EASN International Conference on Innovation in Aviation & Space at the National Center for Scientific Research (NCSR) “Demokritos”.

10th General Assembly of the EASN Association & elections for the next Board of Directors (BoD)

The EASN Association will hold its 10^th General Assembly on Tuesday 3^rd of September, aside of the 9^th EASN International Conference. The General Assembly will take place at the National Center for Scientific Research “Demokritos” (NCSR “Demokritos”) Congress Center in Athens. As the body having the full competent to carry out the aims of the Association, the General Assembly will discuss the achievements of the previous year, set the frame and provide guidelines and input for the next BoD.

The General Assembly will proceed with the dissolution of the current Board of Director (BoD), as it comes to the end of the 3-years term. In this context, the elections for the next BoD will take place on Wednesday 4^th of September at the venue of the conference.

All active members of the EASN Association are kindly invited to participate to both the General Assembly, as well as the elections for the next Board of Directors.

EASN supported projects: Latest news and achievements

With the closing of the ICARUS (Innovative Coarsening-resistant Alloys with enhanced Radiation tolerance and Ultrafine-grained Structure for aerospace application) Project, its team of experts is pleased to see that surprising results were accomplished. In the frame of the project classical CALPHAD and statistical thermodynamics were combined in a general theoretical scheme that allows exploring the Gibbs free energy surface under different possible approximation scenarios. The resulting model predicts the existence of thermodynamically stable multicomponent nanocrystalline alloys and provides a tool for identifying them based on the available physical and chemical information. “Now, not only we show that thermodynamically stable nanocrystalline alloys can be actually fabricated, but we also provide a tool, which can be further improved, and allows the systematic exploration of the thermodynamics of multicomponent metal alloys.” states one of the main ICARUS researchers.

The ICARUS team during its three-year lifetime targeted the identification of thermodynamically stable nanocrystalline (nc) metal alloys resistant to coarsening with enhanced radiation tolerance (based on refractory metals, eg W) as well as lightweight high-strength (based on Al, Mg, Ti) alloys. Several nanocrystalline alloys were produced and tested during the course of the project and the aggregated results of the test campaign will be soon available on the ICARUS Official website. The consortium will present the scientific and technical achievements of the project to the European Commission Project Officer and the EC reviewers on the 18^th of October 2019, allowing them to conduct the project assessment against the applicable Description of Work.

SARAH is currently in its third year of activities and several important milestones have already been achieved. At present, the consortium is organizing its upcoming session, which will be held in the frame of the 9th EASN International Conference on “Innovation in Aviation & Space” on September 4^th, 2019 at IBE Hall, from 14:30 until 18:05 and will be chaired by Dr. Stephan Adden (IBK). ICARUS-SW, a Coordination and Support Action (CSA) H2020 project, was officially launched during its Kick-Off Meeting on the 9^th of May in Patras, Greece beginning its first steps towards its one-year lifetime. The underlying innovation idea of ICARUS-SW is a software for the identification and prediction of new nanocrystalline (nc) alloys with tailored properties. The software can be used as a predictive tool for the exploration, identification and design of new thermodynamically stable multi-component nc metal alloys with enhanced thermal, mechanical and irradiation damage self-healing properties. This can result in new families of materials with unprecedented properties and performances, paving the way for broad application areas: conceptually new structural materials, radiation-tolerant metals, engineered nanostructures for catalysis & energy production, lightweight alloys or corrosion-resistant coatings, unlocking many challenges faced nowadays by science and technology in the various fields.

Undoubtedly there are several commercial software products on the market for the simulation and modeling of phase diagrams and thermochemistry (Calphad Software Products) supporting the exploration of new materials. Yet up to now, there is no such product covering the development of nc alloys. In the frame of the ICARUS-SW project the exploitation, IPR and dissemination strategies of the software will be defined and implemented based on in-depth market analysis, business planning and other exploitation-related activities. ICARUS-SW is coordinated by BRIMATECH and its team of experts also comprises UNIVERSIDAD DE BURGOS and EASN-TIS.
RUMBLE, being in the second half of its three year lifetime, conducted successfully on the 20^th and 21^st of June 2019 the 3^rd Progress Review meeting in Saint-Cyr-l'École, France. The progress performed from the beginning of the project was presented to the European Commission Project Officer who provided his valuable feedback. The RUMBLE partners also participated in a demonstration of the sonic boom simulator, which will be used to investigate the effects of low sonic boom.

The RUMBLE consortium is happy to invite you to its first open workshop that will be held on the 4^th of September 2019, from 16:45 to 18:45 in the frame of the 9^th EASN International Conference on Innovation in Aviation & Space at the National Center for Scientific Research (NCSR) “Demokritos”, in Athens. The workshop will demonstrate the latest promising achievements, present the main produced up-to-date findings and recommendations, as well as offer room for an open discussion between the RUMBLE team and RTD experts from the international aviation community.

Coordination and Support Actions: Latest news

The H2020 CSA OSCAR - Open ScienCe Aeronautic & Air Transport Research, aims at paving the way towards Open Science in European aviation research by detailed analysis of the landscape and by developing, validating, and promoting a suitable Open Science concept. OSCAR held its 6-Months’ progress meeting on the 25^th of June 2019 in Athens, Greece. Representatives of all consortium members participated and discussed upon the main progress made during the initial six months of the project. Moreover, they have cordially prepared and coordinated the foremost tasks and activities planned to take place in the near future. In the frame of this occasion, a fruitful meeting was also held between the OSCAR team and the coordinator of the BE-OPEN project. The latter aims at promoting Open Science in transport research and assist in regulating and standardizing it. The two projects have agreed to frequently exchange, support each other and collaborate where possible; so as to mutually benefit and avoid duplications of effort.

Last but not least, OSCAR will participate at the 9th EASN international Conference on “Innovation in Aviation and Space” which will take place in Athens, Greece from the 3rd until the 6th of September, 2019. OSCAR will be presented on September 3^rd at 15:00h, in the frame of the session dedicated to the Support Actions for coordinating Research in the field of Aviation.

The H2020 Coordination and Support Action RADIAN (Facilitating Collaboration in ReseArch and Development to Foster Further Innovation in European AeroNautics), aimed at achieving a more integrated European research environment in Aeronautics and Air Transportation, is successfully moving towards its closure.

RADIAN has been a multi-step project in the frame of which the most important barriers for international collaboration in aviation research at EU level have been identified, as well as solutions and measures on the regional level have been developed and verified.

The RADIAN team is happy to invite you to the project’s Final Conference, which will be held on September 4^th, 2019, in Athens, Greece; in the frame of the 9^th EASN International Conference. The event is aimed at showing the project’s main results and best practices, also thanks to the contribution of relevant stakeholders in the European aviation sector. The principal focus of the event will be the role of the project in supporting EU-13 countries in the participation in Horizon2020 Aeronautics Calls. Finally, during the event a live demonstration of the ARCPORT Platform will be performed. A collaboration platform entirely dedicated to the Aviation community has been developed in the frame of the H2020 RADIAN project. The “Aeronautics Research Collaboration PORTal” –ARCPORT– is a smart, full-scale networking platform aimed to promote collaboration and provide networking opportunities among its users. ORPHEUS is a novel 3D audio system for simulators, addressing the need for a more realistic reproduction and audio experience of the actual aircraft performance during different operation conditions. ORPHEUS is:

- Replicable for Aircraft and Rotorcraft Cockpit & Cabin simulators

Successful Ending of the ECO-COMPASS Project

ECO-COMPASS project that is funded by EU Horizon 2020 and The Ministry for Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of China, has been completed successfully and researchers from The University of Manchester have made significant contributions related to manufacturing and characterisation, including mechanical, vibration and acoustic behaviour of multi-layered composite plates. ECO-COMPASS effort focused on the improvement of the performance of natural fibre reinforced polymers, mixed with recycled short carbon fibres and eco-friendly epoxy resins. Numerical modelling assisted the optimisation process that aimed to reduce overall structural weight of interior aircraft panels, which leads to reduced aviation emissions and better protection of the environment.

During the last 3 years, researchers from China and EU worked in harmony to develop ecological and multifunctional composites for aircraft interior and secondary structures in ECO-COMPASS. The coordination team reviewed and submitted more than 30 deliverables, 14 articles published in 4 scientific journals, including 10 articles in a special issue of the Chinese Aerospace Journal.

EFESTO - European Flexible hEat Shields: advanced TPS design and tests for future in-Orbit demonstration

The H2020 EFESTO project started in March 2019. The team is preparing for the preliminary designs for the applications defined during concurrent design sessions. The inflatable heat shield could allow the exploration of wider areas on Mars carrying a bigger payload or enhance launcher upper stages reusability. Laboratory tests will be performed on the inflatable structure and on the flexible thermal protection system in preparation to future IOD flights.

EFESTO is coordinated by DEIMOS Space with a team including DLR, ONERA, CIRA, AVIOSPACE and POLITO, representing 4 European countries.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 821801.

Design and characterization of composite materials for CubeSat structures

The project goal is to evaluate carbon-epoxy composites as potential materials to be used in CubeSat structures. Evaluation of mechanical properties, numerical simulation by FEA, and prototyping the CubeSat structure have been the main research achievements. Vibration analysis and UV radiation of the composite prototype are the next activities.
- Evaluation of addition of nanoparticles in the epoxy resin (Al2O3, ZnO, graphene & graphite)
- Cost-benefit evaluation of manufacturing process (VARTM, RTM, autoclave)
- Thermal and numerical simulation of the CubeSat by FEA under Low-Earth-Orbit parameters Vibration test plan under CubeSat standard.
