  • 10th EASN Virtual Conference - Final Countdown

    Only 2 days left for the beginning of the 10th EASN Virtual Conference on Innovation in Aviation & Space to the Satisfaction of the European Citizens.

    It is the first time that the EASN annual gathering is going virtual and this surely represents a big challenge for the EASN Conference Organizing Committee. We, the EASN Team, we are doing our very best to rise to the occasion! We feel honoured and proud to organize the sole aviation & space related conference during the challenging times of COVID-19 and thus offer a small contribution to Europe’s efforts back to normality. 

    The Organizing Committee is ready to virtually welcome the participants of the EASN Conference between the 2nd and the 4th September 2020. So far, more than 350 scientists, engineers and policy makers are expected to join this virtual event where about 323 technical presentations will be distributed in approximately 47 sessionsThe final agenda of the EASN Virtual Conference has been released and you may find it here. Among others, the EASN Virtual Conference's programme includes: 

    • 9 Κey-Νote Lectures
    • An extended dissemination of the activities performed in the frame of the Clean Sky 2 Joint Undertaking (CSJU)showcased in two dedicated Workshops and a number of further CS projects.
    • A Workshop which disseminates the major achievements of more than 20 collaborative research projects, funded under H2020, with the support of INEA.
    • A variety of technical workshops on emerging scientific and technological topics
    • A number of sessions focusing on significan issues in the context of the European Aeronautics research area. Special attention is given to the implementation of Open Science as well as to the Impact Assesment of the performed research. 

    The 10th EASN Virtual Conference will be performed with the kind support of the Clean Sky Joint UndertakingLEONARDO S.p.aItalian Aerospace Research Centre (CIRA) and Fraunhofer IPT. The event is kindly sponsored by LEONARDO S.p.a.

  • Interview of Mr. Bart Biebuyck, Executive Director of FCH JU

    Mr. Bart Biebuyck (short CV here) is the Executive Director of Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU), a unique public private partnership supporting research, technological development and demonstration (RTD) activities in fuel cell and hydrogen energy technologies in Europe. The significant technological and scientific field addressed by this Joint Undertaking exhibits obvious synergies with he Aviation Sector. 

    Mr. Biebuyck kindly accepted to share his views with the readers of the EASN Newsletter, regarding the challenges and the scopes of the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) as well as his viewpoint on the role of Academia in the frame of the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking. 

    On the occasion of the 10th EASN Virtual International Conference, Mr. Biebuyck will give a keynote lecture entitled "Preparing a zero carbon aviation in Europe". The lecture is scheduled on the 2nd of September 2020, at 14:00 CET.

  • Interview of Dr. Rémy Denos, Policy Officer – Space research, innovation and start-ups DG Defence Industry and Space (DEFIS)

    EASN Association is pleased to host an interview of Dr. Rémy Denos, Policy Officer – Space research, innovation and start-ups DG Defence Industry and Space (DEFIS) of the European Commission (short CV here). Dr. Rémy Denos kindly accepted to share with the readers of the EASN Newsletter his perspective regarding the objectives and challenges of the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) for Space as well as the involvement of Academia in shaping SRIA for Space research and its expecting role on implementing SRIA. 

    In the frame of the 10th EASN Virtual International Conference Dr. Denos will give a keynote lecture with title "Space Research and Innovation under Horizon Europe: state of preparation". The keynote lecture will be given the 3rd of September 2020, at 09:30 CET.

EASN supported projects: Latest news and achievements

  • The EU funded collaborative research project “Future propulsion and integration: towards a hybrid/electric aircraft”- FUTPRINT50 aims to develop technologies and configurations for a commercial hybrid-electric regional airliner for up to 50 passengers that could enter service in 2035-40. Specifically, open-source design tools, hybrid-electric configurations and reference data sets will be generated and shared with the aeronautics community in an effort to accelerate the development for future electrified aircraft. Additionally, the FUTPRINT50 consortium will deliver road maps not only for technology but also for regulation, so as to enable market, technology and legal readiness for entry into service of a hybrid-electric aircraft in 2035-40.

    At present the consortium is organizing the presentation of the FUTPRINT50 Project at the 10th EASN Virtual International Conference on “Innovation in Aviation & Space to the Satisfaction of the European Citizens” on September 2nd, 2020. The presentations are part of the “Hybrid - Electric flight” Workshop that will start at 11:00 CET.

    Further to the above, project partners are particularly proud to have included in their plans the FUTPRINT50 Academy. Future engineers along with the supervision of university professors and the mentoring of FUTPRINT50 partners are given the opportunity to perform Master Theses on key themes identified within the project. Interaction with FUTPRINT50 activities will be ensured through the organization of web-conferences, training sessions and physical workshops.

  • SAFELAND was officially launched during its virtual Kick-Off Meeting on the 8th of July 2020 beginning its first steps towards its two and a half years lifetime. Besides the formal project kick off, the meeting provided an opportunity for the ten consortium members to meet, obtain an overview of the entire project and initiate the first interactions.

    The main aim of SAFELAND is to create a valuable solution for supporting flight and landing of aircraft operated by a single pilot, due to partial or total incapacitation of the pilot. During its 30-month duration, the project will investigate the interaction of the air traffic controller with onboard automation and/or a ground-based pilot operating through a remote cockpit position to manage the flight.

    The project will develop a real-time cockpit simulator, a control work position, a ground cockpit simulator, and a simulated airline operation control centre. The SAFELAND Consortium comprises partners from all over Europe: Deep Blue, EuroUSC Italia, AIRHOLDING, DLR, EASN-TIS, EUROCONTROL, EUI, Luftfartsverket, Swiss International Air Lines.

    Stakeholders will also benefit from the feedback provided by an external independent advisory board. The board will include technical, safety, legal, operational, human performance, security, cybersecurity, and economical experts. 

    The aim and objectives of the SAFELAND project will be presented to the 10th EASN Virtual International Conference during the “Human Factors towards Increasing Automation & Autonomy (SAFEMODE)” Session, which will be chaired by Mr. Simone Pozzi from Deep Blue, Italy. The Human Factors towards Increasing Automation & Autonomy (SAFEMODE) session is scheduled the 1st Day of the EASN Conference, 02.09.2020 and starts at 14:30 CET, while the presentation of SAFELAND will be performed at 15:30 CET.

  • With the aim to take the use of composite materials to the next level, the EU-funded NHYTE project is developing new efficient concepts and methodologies to enable the realization of innovative and green integrated aero-structures produced by a novel recyclable hybrid thermoplastic composite material with multifunctional capabilities, based on automated and continuous out of autoclave production processes. Having completed more than three years full of exciting research and successful project activities, NHYTE now progresses its pace towards its end in October 2020.

    Project researchers are currently focusing efforts on delivering at the end of the project physical demonstrators, representative of fuselage or wing portions, produced by robotic machine implementing processes as In-situ Consolidation Automated Fibre Placement (ISC AFP) for the skins, continuous forming for the stringers and Induction welding for assembling the parts.

    The results obtained within the project will be presented at a NHYTE dedicated session in the frame of 10th EASN Virtual International Conference on the 4th of September, 2020 from 14:30 to 16:30 CET that will be chaired by Dr. M. Barile.

  • Nearly one year has passed since the official launch of the SLOWD project. The project research progresses well despite the challenges raised due to the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

    The SLOWD consortium is happy to invite you to its dedicated session that will be held on the 3rd of September 2020, from 11:00 to 13:20  in the frame of the virtual 10th EASN International Conference on Innovation in Aviation & Space to the Satisfaction of the European Citizens.  The session will demonstrate the latest promising achievements, present the main produced up-to-date findings and recommendations, as well as offer room for a discussion between the SLOWD team.

  • iFACT, being in the M8 of its two year lifetime, successfully conducted on the 23rd  of July 2020 the 1st Progress Review meeting. Following increased concerns about the COVID-19 virus, the meeting was held online. The progress performed from the beginning of the project was presented to the European Commission Project Officer who provided her valuable feedback. iFACT partners will continue their collaboration online, until the next meeting in December 2020.

  • As the project approaches the final months of its 3 year life time, partners are getting ready to present the final achievements and findings.

    The RUMBLE consortium plans to organize towards its end a 2nd RUMBLE Open Workshop, where besides showcasing the project final results, it will constitute a unique opportunity for an open discussion between the RUMBLE team and RTD experts from the international aviation community.   • The EC-funded Coordination and Support Action OSCAR (Open ScienCe Aeronautic & air transport Research), aims primarily at paving the way towards Open Science in European aviation research, by detailed analysis of the landscape; and by developing, validating, and promoting a suitable Open Science concept.

    The OSCAR project will participate to the 10th EASN virtual Conference with a dedicated open session, which will be held on Day 3, September 4th 2020, at 14:30-16:30 (CET). The session will be chaired by the project Coordinator, Mr. Gerhard Pauly (Fraunhofer). The main progress, achievements and up to date results of the OSCAR project will be presented, as well as an interesting overview of the curent state of Open Science, its definition, challenges, opportunities and modern methods. An open discussion on the topic of open science will then follow with the audience. Looking forward to seeing you all there!

  • EASN Association at AeroDays2020

    For almost three decades, the European Aeronautics Days (AeroDays) have been the leading event in aviation research and innovation, mirroring the priorities and strategies set within the European Union Research Framework Programmes. The eighth AeroDays builds on the achievements of Horizon 2020, the biggest EU research and innovation program to date, and will be based on a new approach by integrating two events organized as Tandem-AeroDays19.20, in Romania in 2019 and Germany in 2020. The synchronized approach will bridge the achievements of Horizon 2020 with the strategic goals and expectations for the next decade. It offers the chance to fuel European and national competitiveness in aeronautics and the air transport sector and to reinforce the academic, research and industrial network of all EU member states. Under the patronage of the European Commission and the Federal Republic of Germany, which will hold the EU Council-Presidency in the second semester of 2020, the #AeroDays2020 will convene decision-makers to discuss the future of aeronautics and the global air transport. 

    This year, the AeroDays2020, in which EASN is actively participating in its organization, will be taking place in a format adapted to the current COVID-19 situation with an on-site-program for speakers and guests on the stage of the Meistersaal in Berlin along with an online-service via our streaming platform for virtual participants. For both #AeroDays2020 technical events, the high-level and by invitation opening event Berlin Aviation Summit (#BAS2020) on 24th of November 2020 as well as the open innovation and technology platform #AeroDays2020 FORUM on 25th and 26th of November 2020, hybrid event platforms will be set up. 

    AeroDays2020 is a unique event as it intends to provide a platform to share and review the latest developments in aeronautics and air transport across the European Union, further strengthening its leadership on a highly competitive and strategic international market.   • The increase of competition in aeronautics and the need for modern aircrafts to cope with the demanding environmental goals ask for challenging technological solutions and the development of breakthrough technologies and structural concepts. The progress on advancing existing materials and the ability to develop novel materials offering less weight, enhanced mechanical properties, more functionalities, manufacturing flexibility, recyclability, etc. are the key for responding to the emerging needs of increasing efficiency, increasing safety, reducing costs, and decreasing the environmental footprint.

    In this book, Prof. Spiros Pantelakis, Honorary Chairman EASN, and Prof. Konstantinos Tserpes, Member of EASN Board of Directors, have organized a team effort aiming to describe the current advances and emerging needs on aeronautical materials and manufacturing processes.

    The book contains 13 interesting chapters. The chapter by Spiros Pantelakis presents the historical development of aeronautical materials from the time of the legends, till today. Alexis Kermanidis gives an overview of the evolution of aircraft aluminum alloys from the original Al-Cu alloys to modern nano-crystalline and hybrid aluminum alloys. The chapter of Brian Falzon and Robert Pierce presents the evolution, current status, and future challenges of the thermosetting composite materials in aerostructures. Marco Barile, Leonardo Michele Iannone, Silvio Pappadà and Pierluca Roberti discuss the most recent advancements and applications of thermoplastic composites, focusing on the reasons why they are increasingly representing a more viable manufacturing solution for structural components. The first chapter of George Lampeas presents the recent developments on additive manufacturing by focusing on the design by topology optimization, materials, and processes. In the next chapter, he presents the specific characteristics of cellular materials that act as cores in aeronautical sandwich structures. The chapter of Ronny Sachse, Daniel Fernandez, Yves Klett and Peter Middendorf introduce highly promising concepts on integral, disruptive, and multifunctional aircraft structures. Konstantinos Tserpes and Spiros Pantelakis discuss the status and prospective of the nano-enabled multifunctional materials developed for aircraft applications by focusing on the mechanical behavior and multi-scale modeling. In the next chapter, Xiaosu Yi, Jianfeng Tong, Xvfeng Zhang, Jin Zhu, Xiaoqing Liu, Guijun Xian, Yan Li, Fangbo Ding, Chris Rudd, Xiaoling Liu and Pooria Khalili present the recent developments of biopolymers and biocomposites by focusing on different materials, their manufacturing processes, properties, and prospective applications. In the next chapter, Liberata Guadagno, Carlo Naddeo, Luigi Vertuccio, Elisa Calabrese, Giuseppina Barra and MarialuigiaRaimondo present the current shortcomings of self-healing materials for their applications in aeronautics. The chapter of Peer Woizeschke deals with laser-based processes for joining light metals and lightweight structures. Konstantinos Tserpes presents the evolution of adhesive bonding technology in aircraft structures by focusing on materials, processes, NDT methods, design concepts, and certification aspects. Finally, the book closes with the chapter of Georgios Kanterakis, Roland Chemama and Konstantinos Kitsianos on the contemporary repair challenges and the latest innovations in equipment and methodologies on bonded repair for composite structures.

    The book, is therefore, a very timely description of the state-of-the-art and future challenges of aeronautical materials and manufacturing processes for engineers, researchers, and graduate students.
