  • Interview of Eric Dautriat, executive director of the European Clean Sky Programme

    This June the CEAS Board unanimously decided to confer the CEAS Award 2017 to Mr. Eric Dautriat. CEAS said: “Eric Dautriat has contributed in an exemplary, outstanding way to the French space community and to the European aeronautics technology development and demonstration, essential for the progress of the environmental sustainability and competitiveness of the European aeronautical industry.
    After leading the Clean Sky Joint Undertaking for 7 years, this September Eric Dautriat is moving on to a new chapter in his career. In this frame, the EASN Association is pleased to host an interview where he shares his views and assesses the project’s added value and impact.

  • 6th EASN International Conference on Innovation in European Aeronautics Research

    The EASN Association and the Conference Organisers would like to say a very big thank you to Workshop and Session Chairs, Authors and Presenters, the members of the Scientific Committee and everyone else who has contributed to make this Conference, the largest, broader and most comprehensive gathering of the Association yet.

    The 6th EASN International Conference includes 11 Thematic Workshops and 28 Technical Sessions where 216 Speakers from 29 Countries will present the latest advancements, innovations and researches in Aeronautics and Air Transport.

  • Research and Innovation: After the EU Referendum

    Research and Innovation: After the EU Referendum

    The outcome of the recent referendum in U.K. undoubtably will influence the research performed in collaboration between the U.K. and european entities.

    In Framework Programme 7 from 2007-13 the UK received €6.9billion and is a net beneficiary from EU research programmes. Currently 15% of all academic staff at UK universities are from other EU countries and about 60% of the UK’s internationally co-authored research papers are with EU partners. The Royal Academy of Engineering along with the Academy of Medical Sciences, the British Academy for the Humanities and Social Sciences, the Royal Society, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Royal Irish Academy and the Learned Society of Wales have published a common statement according to which the current uncertainty is having immediate implications and raises many questions.

    As the EASN has several members from the U.K. and is concerned about the international collaboration, we will monitor closely and will publish any future reactions and discussions.

  • Interview of Rui Marcelino, chairman of the Portuguese Aeronautic Industry Association (PEMAS)

    As this year’s EASN Conference will take place in Porto we have invited the chairman of the Portuguese Aeronautic Industry Association (PEMAS) to set the scene of the Portuguese Aeronautics and Space Sector. In his interview he introduces the PEMAS network and talks to us about “Driving Change Through Design”.

    Rui Marcelino is the founder of Almadesign Studio. Besides more than 400 design projects he has been design consultant for several Portuguese companies and institutions. He participates as lecturer in different events and countries and collaborates frequently with several Portuguese Universities and Technological Centres.

    Recently, Rui Marcelino has been engaged in fostering collaborative R&D projects in the transportation area, involving several industrial companies and R&D institutions, national and international, for the development of innovative solutions, with higher levels of integration, more comfortable, more eco-efficient and lighter solutions with the help of new technologies and materials.

  • Workshop on “Support Actions for Coordinating Research in the Field of Aeronautics and Air Transport”

    To realize the new European vision beyond 2020 for the horizon towards 2050, i.e. meet the societal and market needs, maintain and extend the industrial leadership, protect the environment and the energy supply, ensure safety and security, Europe will engage in large scale, intensive and coordinated Research and Innovation.

    CAPPADOCIA, CATER, FORUM-AE and OPTICS, all respond to the 6th EC call for proposals and deal with the same topic but different domains: Cost Efficiency, Time Efficiency, Environmental related Research and Innovation and Safety Research, respectively. 

    The four “sister” projects will once again hold a common Workshop on “Support Actions for Coordinating Research in the Field of Aeronautics and Air Transport”. This joint event will take place in the frame of the 6th EASN International Conference on Innovation in European Aeronautics Research, on October 19th 2016, from 9:00 until 10:40

    The session will be chaired by Dr. Dietrich Knoerzer from the European Commission. The four Coordination and Support Actions will present their up-to-date progress and results. An open panel discussion will then follow, focused on the main lessons learnt and way forward, in light of the upcoming MG-1.5-2016-2017 call.

  • EFFICOMP

    EFFICOMP

    The EFFICOMP project has already completed its first semester. A detail planning has been developed for the evaluation of spark detection technology. A purchase order on the required materials has been released and the first lightning strike tests are being scheduled. Generic manufacturing process structure has been established, including the definition of unit-processes (UP). Associated unit-processes (UP) and the targeted manufacturing processes have been selected, including the tempering technologies and infusion. A selection of materials and tempering technologies has been analyzed, having due regard to the project’s high-level objectives in general, and the cost impact in particular. The different materials and tempering technologies have been rated based on how far they address the high-level objectives of EFFICOMP, as well as with regards to their applicability.  DLR, who is responsible for the cost-management and cost-efficiency of the novel technologies, has developed a basic system with boundary guidelines based on the selected manufacturing techniques and materials. The partners are currently working on listing the associated parameters and suitable data collection applications to be selected for the cost assessment. The aim is that DLR will establish a data collection format that the partners can implement for the associated parameters.   • ComBoNDT

    ComBoNDT

    Conventional ultrasonic testing of samples is being realized in order to control the sample quality by checking the absence of defects. All samples with single contamination which were characterized with ultrasonic testing were later distributed among partners. A series of experiments were realized for adhesive bondline quality assurance, including Contact Acoustic Nonlinearity-CAN, Nonlinear Resonant Spectroscopy-NRUS, Local Defect Resonance-LDR (in order to detect weak bonds), µ-Computed Tomography measurements, electromechanical impedance method (EMI) and LAser Shock Adhesion Test (LASAT). At the same time, a portable prototype device capable of performing inductive measurements was developed. Moreover, a four point bending machine was adapted for testing of the coupons, in order to create the strain field for the inspection.  Furthermore, a sensing patch consisting of magnetostrictive wires in the form of ribbons was developed. The measurement of strength of the rest of contaminated bonded joints by conducting mode I and mode II fracture toughness tests has been completed. The experimental results reveal the detrimental effect of the pre-bond contamination on the bondline performance. Additionally, the procedure for the after-bond ageing has been initiated in order to measure the effect after-bond of combined moisture and temperature on the adhesive bond integrity. ComBoNDT will be presented at the upcoming EASN Conference, during a one-day Workshop on Quality Assurance of Composite Materials.   • UMRIDA Symposium & Workshop on Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) & Robust Design Optimization (RDO)

    UMRIDA

    The UMRIDA Symposium & Workshop on Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) & Robust Design Optimization (RDO) is the second and final open event organized within the activities of the project, marking the successful completion of a long 3-year research. The latest findings and optimizations methods will be presented in this 2.5-day event at the Vrije University of Brussels (VUB), in September 20-22

    Sessions on UQ and RDO for turbomachinery, external aerodynamics and aeronautical Multiphysics applications such as combustion, Fluid-Structure Interaction, CHT or aeroacoustics are organized, which include UQ for manufacturing uncertainties. These sessions are complemented by invited speakers from Rolls-Royce and AIRBUS, two invited sessions from the ERCOFTAC SIG-45 and the EUFORIA project, while a round table discussion will mark the ending of the Symposium & Workshop.     After the completion of the project, the UMRIDA partners aim to release an UMRIDA Book and Best Practise Guide on the industrial application of UQ and RDO techniques, summarizing the developed methodologies and outcomes of the project, to be shared with the research and industrial community.

  • Having completed its final year and hence a successful period of project activities, i-VISION held its final General Assembly and Review Meeting from 9th to 10th of August 2016, in Munich, Germany. During this two day meeting, the very positive outputs achieved were presented and received enthusiastically by the Project Officer and the participants. This final meeting closed a successful period of project activities, yielding constructive feedback, which concluded that there is still room for further research on the crucial field of virtual cockpit environments. This fruitful outcome allows considering a next future step for this cooperation, in order to achieve a joint design following the i-VISION structure. In the same time, i-VISION is currently organizing its participation to the 6th EASN International Conference to be held at Porto, Portugal on October 2016 and it was present at the distinguished Farnborough International AirShow  on July 2016. The Farnborough International Airshow prides itself on facilitating first-class business opportunities for the global aerospace industry. During this event the work undertaken within the i-VISION project was presented in OPTIS and SOTON dedicated booths where project related posters were displayed and leaflets were available for distribution. In addition, the demonstrators created within the project were exhibited in this event enabling the participants to actually “touch” and have a close view of the significant foregrounds developed within the project. I-VISION’s presence in these major events is a major dissemination opportunity for the project since it increases considerably the potential for maximum exploitation of its results.

Coordination and Support Actions: Latest news

  • CAPPADOCIA is thrilled to invite you to participate to its upcoming workshop on “Strategic cost efficiency & innovation enablers for a competitive and sustainable European aviation”. The workshop will be held in the frame of the 6th EASN International Conference on Innovation in European Aeronautics Research on October 19th 2016, from 14:30 until 18:10.

    The main objective of the workshop is to have key RTD people from the European aviation community contribute to the identification, justification and prospective implementation plan definition of the industry’s most critical issues for its future competitiveness and sustainability.

    To this end, a review of the latest updates (state-of-the-art, bottlenecks, gaps, innovation opportunities, proposals for future action plan) on the 4 following areas will be performed: Collaborative supply chain, Factory of the future, Standardization and certification, Latest innovative emerging trends.

    To support multiple views to be heard, the workshop offers room for discussion and up to 12 speakers to present their individual standpoint to support the workshop objectives through a five-minute pitch.   • CATER is a coordination and support action of the European Commission, aiming at gathering information on R&I projects, research currently conducted,  and remaining gaps, so as to provide insightful information and recommendations on these time efficiency aspects.

    The CATER consortium is happy to invite you to its first annual Workshop that will be held on 18 October 2016, from 10:20 until 16:00 in the frame of the 6th EASN International Conference on Innovation in European Aeronautics Research. The event will be held in Porto, Portugal at the Crowne Plaza Porto Hotel.

    The CATER Workshop will focus on the topic of Time Efficiency Research and Innovation, demonstrate the latest promising achievements, bottlenecks, gaps and opportunities in the field, present the main produced up-to-date findings and recommendations, as well as offer room for an open discussion between the CATER team and key RTD experts of all aviation sectors.

    The results will support CATER in producing recommendations towards the EC and ACARE and influence future strategic priorities.

  • SUNJET II successfully organized the SUNJET II Forum on “Europe-Japan Cooperation in the domain of R&T for Aviation”. The Forum was held on the 2nd of June 2016 during the ILA-Berlin Airshow at Berlin ExpoCenter Airport.

    Participants from Europe and Japan had the privilege to attend a number of excellent presentations from the most important European and Japanese stakeholders. Presentations of the SUNJET II Forum are available online here. A photo gallery of the event is also available online here.

    SUNJET II will also be present at the Japan International Aerospace Exhibition, which will be held on October 12th-15th, 2016 at the Tokyo Big Sight.  The Project Coordinator, Jean-François Perelgritz, will summarize the project’s main aims and objectives during the “Sunjet II Outline and EU-Japan Cooperation” presentation, which will take place on October 13th, 2016 at 16:00pm at the Tokyo Big Sight.

  • AIST @ Fraunhofer IFAM – Workshop on Joint R&D in Adhesive Bonding

    Adhesive bonding is a versatile technology widely applied in innumerable products. On-going R&D results in further innovations in processes and in commodities with better performance at lower prices. The event aims at presenting the complementary competencies available at AIST and IFAM and at identifying topics suitable for joint research with industry in Japan and Europe.

  • TRACE-IT

    TRACE-IT developed high sensitivity ultrasonic Phased Array (PA) technology incorporating sophisticated defect detection software using i.e. Full Matrix Capture (FMC), Time Reversal Focusing (TRF) methods to detect very small size flaws in composite components aircraft structure. Outputs from the PA technique will be used to perform online or semi-online Damage Tolerance assessment of damaged composite components, using advanced numerical Finite Element Methods (FEM).

    The advanced Inspection solution has all systems automated in order to increase the reliability, sensitivity and achieving higher levels of POD and lowering the POF of critical components. Moreover, these systems are in line with the market trends allowing the reduction of inspection time and costs and improving the Quality Control process.

  • Reworkable, recyclable and repairable thermoset epoxy composites in transportation applications

    IK4CIDETEC

    Fiber-reinforced polymer composites (FRPCs) based on thermoset epoxy resins are a class of high-performance structural materials. However, their difficulties for reprocessing, repairing or recycling, which are inherent to their thermoset nature, are limiting their fast growth.

    A novel “dynamic” epoxy network has been developed showing:i) good reprocessability of postcured composites by thermoforming; ii) reparability of delaminations and microcracks by applying heat and pressure in the damaged part; iii) recyclability by matrix dissolution or by grinding and reprocessing (Contact: Germán Cabañero, BDM, gcabanero@cidetec.es)

  • Initiative Towards sustAinable Kerosene for Aviation (ITAKA)

    Itaka Project

    The ITAKA project started in November 2012 and after 4 years of working for the deployment of sustainable alternative fuels for aviation in Europe will end the next October 2016. To support future initiatives, we will be sharing our main results 13th-14th of September in Madrid together with other projects and to discuss the next steps in the workshop Biojet in Europe: the way forward. 

    ITAKA partners and collaborators have worked together during the last 4 years to bring to a reality a sustainable biojet value chain in Europe: improving the production of camelina oil, flying series of both long and short haul flights (Airbus 330 and Embraer 190) for data gathering, and making possible the 1st world usage of biojet on the conventional airport fueling system in Oslo. 

  • RBF4AERO Project

    RBF4AERO

    The RBF4AERO project officially ended on August 31st. Among the last developed features is rbf4aeroFSI, namely an evolutionary-algorithm (EA) based optimization procedure in which the elasticity of deformable structures is taken into account for each design point. Such an FSI capability works according to both the two-way and mode-superposition approach. An intensive activity of bug fix, processes performance enhancement and stress tests was performed on the Benchmark Technology during the closing months. Final validation to compare numerical outputs with the experimental data was also finalised. The Consortium is discussing future developments and implementing the strategy to the market.   • Aero Glass is aimed at improving aviation safety by relieving pilots of the huge mental load of converting complex instrument readings and 2D flat panel displays into 3D, 360° reality. The augmented reality application for smart glasses visualizes terrain, navigation, traffic (ADS-B), instrument, weather, and airspace information right in front of the pilot's eyes, whichever way they turn their head. 

    The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 674045. It has been in development since 2013 and is close to its second beta program that will precede the application's planned release in 2017.

  • Industrial Non Destructive Inspection of Lightweight Materials by X-ray Phase Contrast Imaging

    Since its discovery, X-ray phase contrast imaging promised to revolutionize X-ray imaging in applications as diverse as medical imaging and industrial non-destructive testing. How do these promises translate today into advantages for industrial non-destructive inspection?

    Through a series of presentations from industrial end-users (such as Dassault Aviation and RUAG Aviation), the workshop will show the potential of X-ray phase contrast imaging for the non-destructive inspection of lightweight materials (composites, polymers, ceramics, Aluminium sandwiches...).
