EASN Newsletter - April 2020

The first EASN periodic Newsletter for 2020 is now published.

In this issue you may read, the thoughts of the Co-Chairmen of the 10th EASN International Conference regarding the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, and its potential influence in the progress of organizing as well as carrying out our event in upcoming September.

EASN-WEGEMT MoU
Prof. Peilin Zhou, Chairman of the European Association of Universities in Marine Technology (WEGEMT) and Prof. Andreas Strohmayer, Chairman of the EASN Association share their viewpoints about the established Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between WEGEMT and EASN.

EASN Conference Best Paper Award
Dr. Yaroslav Dvirnyk, Dr. Dmytro Pavlenko and Dr. Radoslaw Przysowa received the best paper award for their work "Determination of serviceability limits of a turboshaft engine by the criterion of blade natural frequency and stall margin" presented in the 9th EASN International Conference and published in the respective issue of proceedings. The winners share their views on the future of research in the topic of their work in the following interview.

EASN Association joins as full member the Initiative for Science in Europe (ISE)

Recognizing the benefits of joining forces and making our voice stronger in the European research community, the EASN Board of Directors took the decision to join the the Initiative for Science in Europe (ISE) as a full member. The Initiative for Science in Europe (ISE) is an independent platform of European Learned Societies and Research Organizations operating within different disciplines and across sectors. ISE supports all fields of science at a European level, involves researchers in the design and implementation of European science policies, and advocates strong independent scientific advice in European policy making.

EASN Workshop for Space postponed

Following increased concerns about the COVID-19 virus, the EASN Association is taking the unpleasant but necessary step to postpone the EASN International Workshop on Space: "Implementing the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda for Space: The Academia Response".

iFACT space project launched

iFACT (iodine Fed Advanced Cusp field Thruster) project was successfully launched in Friedrichshafen, Germany in January 2020. Funded by the European Commission as part of its Horizon 2020 Programme, the €2M project will run for 24 months.

A green future with carbon-neutral aviation- is it possible?

The EU funded initiative FUTPRINT50 kicked-off in January 2020 and runs until December 2022 with the aim to accelerate technologies required for the entry-into-service of a commercial hybrid-electric aircraft in a class of up to 50 seats by 2035/40.

At global level aviation is challenging the mitigation of the sector's impact on the environment. The aviation community has realized that a change is required and therefore adopted the ambition to have a climate neutral aviation system by 2050 (FlightPath2050).

ISE launches a petition for more investment in Horizon Europe

EASN Association supports the campaign started by the Initiative for Science in Europe (ISE) asking Member States to keep their commitment to Horizon Europe as high as proposed by the Parliament despite an overall lower investment in the Multiannual Financial Framework.

Newly elected EASN BoD: Interview of Prof. Andreas Strohmayer, new EASN Chairman & Prof. Spiros Pantelakis, former EASN Chairman and current Honorary EASN Chairman
EASN is entering a new era as Prof. Andreas Strohmayer (Dept. of Aircraft Design, University of Stuttgart), has been appointed as the new Chairman of EASN. In addition, the title of EASN Honorary Chairman was granted to Prof. Spiros Pantelakis in recognition of his exceptional contribution and long-lasting support to the Association. On the occasion of this new beginning, Prof. Andreas Strohmayer and Prof. Spiros Pantelakis share their thoughts for the current status and the upcoming steps of the Association.

9th EASN International Conference on "Innovation in Aviation & Space"
The 9th EASN International Conference on "Innovation in Aviation & Space", the largest and most comprehensive gathering of the Association so far, was successfully held in Athens, Greece between the 3rd and 6th of September 2019.

The title of EASN Honorary Chairman granted to Prof. Spiros Pantelakis

The title of EASN Association Honorary Chairman was granted to Prof. Spiros Pantelakis in recognition of his exceptional contribution and long-lasting support to the Association. The ceremony was held in the frame of the 9th EASN International Conference in Athens on September 3rd, 2019.

Election of EASN's new Board of Directors

The 10th EASN General Assembly took place in Athens on September 3rd, 2019 aside the 9th EASN International Conference. During the General Assembly, the Board of Directors was dissolved and candidates for a new BoD were announced. The EASN BoD election took place on Wednesday September 4th. In the subsequent first meeting of the new Board of Directors, the positions of the BoD members within the Board have been assigned. Following to the above, the composition of the new BoD is as following:
